Climate Model and Climate Data Workshop for Impact Research 2024

Date and Time

Thursday, 21 November 2024, 09:30 - 15:00.

Location

ETH Zurich, Universitätsstrasse 16, 8092 Zürich, CHN building, Room L 17.1

Description

This workshop will provide an introduction to the concept and functionality of climate models. After an introductory overview of what a climate model is and how it works, we will explore various technical aspects, including input parameters, the types of output generated, and other important considerations such as uncertainties, biases, and model independence. Additionally, we will offer insights into various observational and reanalysis products. Furthermore, we will guide you through the process of accessing climate model and observational data at C2SM and other sources, such as the Copernicus climate data store and external page Earth System Grid Federation (ESGF).

The workshop will also include a brief hands-on session on how to use climate data. We will explain the most common data format NetCDF, how to read this into Python and R, and showcase simple calculations using the Climate Data Operators (CDO).

Target participants

The workshop is offered to C2SM community members working in the impacts sector (staff of professors/group leaders who are C2SM members). No prior knowledge is necessary.

Equipment

Participants will need to bring a laptop with internet access for the hands-on session (we will use JupyterLab). If you are NOT based at ETH, please set up “eduroam” beforehand to ensure you will be able to connect to the internet.
