ICON goes GPU !

Developers from Max Plank Institute, DWD, DKRZ, CSCS, MeteoSwiss, and ETHZ joined forces during a hackathon week in May 2019 to push forward the adaptation work of the ICON model.

C2SM members have greatly benefitted from the last advances in computing technologies by being able to leverage the power of Graphical Processing Units (GPUs) for the external pageregional climate and numerical weather prediction model COSMO. Now that several members, such as MeteoSwiss and some research groups at ETH, are preparing the transition to the new external pageICON weather and climate model, first steps are being taken to be able to also run this model on GPUs and to get ready for future systems. This would allow us to run future climate simulations on some of the world faster supercomputers such as Piz Daint at CSCS. Developers from Max Plank Institute, DWD, DKRZ, CSCS, MeteoSwiss, C2SM@ETHZ, and ETHZ joined forces during a hackathon week in May 2019 to push forward the adaptation work of the ICON model. This was a great opportunity to exchange know-how on GPU computing. Thanks to all the participants for the great work!
